The first two rounds of fantasy basketball drafts are as talented as they’ve been in years, with players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis slipping into Round 2. That’s a lot of depth!
In Points and Roto leagues are a kind of fantasy football competition in which players, however, our experts recommend just three players to select with the first overall choice.

James Harden is a PG/SG with the Brooklyn Nets.

I could make a case for Nikola Jokic to start at No. 1, but I’ll take advantage of positional scarcity and go with Harden. A three-way tie for first place is formed by Giannis Antetokounmpo. This season, though, shooting guard seems to be a bit of a void. I can’t think of another two who are genuine contenders for a spot in the top ten in Points leagues. When playing Points, positional scarcity is much more important. The fact that Harden is dual eligible is a huge advantage. After Harden, the high-end options are limited, so selecting him first will set the tone for the remainder of your selection. Cregan’s words
Nikola Jokic is a center for the Denver Nuggets.
In point formats, Jokic led the 2024-21 season, almost 900 points ahead of Russell Westbrook and Luka Doncic, who were next on the list. It’s uncommon to find such dominance, but Jokic has done so, and although his numbers in scoring, rebounding, and passing are impressive, he’s also a hard worker who plays a lot of minutes. It’s also crucial to have a first-round selection playing every game rather than sitting on the bench. Jokic is a tireless worker. With scoring guard Jamal Murray sidelined, expect Jokic to play a significant amount of minutes and serve as the focal point of the Denver attack once again. He is required to do about everything for the Nuggets. In imagination, this is a positive thing! Karabell’s words
The sheer quantity of Jokic’s counting statistics is mind-boggling. Jokic, who led all players in points leagues by a full four points per game last season, is the safest and most bankable choice in points again again this season, with lead scoring and distributing responsibilities on his large shoulders. Milwaukee Bucks PF Giannis Antetokounmpo

In points leagues, Jokic would be a deserving first-round selection, but I’ll give Antetokounmpo a chance to shine as well. Last season, Giannis was caught in a perfect storm of value deflation, as the two-time reigning MVP had put up fantastic statistics for the previous two seasons but was being blamed for the Bucks’ lack of playoff success. Every regular-season achievement was devalued in the public view, and the expectation was on for him to do well in the playoffs nearly to the exclusion of his regular-season accomplishments. While still very productive, Giannis’ scoring and rebounding statistics did not improve from the previous season for the first time in his career. However, the Bucks won the title at the conclusion of the season, with Giannis playing the best game of his life. All bets are off this season. I anticipate him to come back in a major manner, and the Bucks as a whole might channel some of the Warriors’ 2016 swagger, when everyone contributes freely and easily. I’ll seriously consider Giannis as the first overall selection in points leagues. Snellings –
Roto leagues
Nikola Jokic is a center for the Denver Nuggets.
Don’t give it too much thought. Last season, Jokic was the top roto player, comfortably outperforming Stephen Curry on the Player Rater. There is little reason to believe that numbers will fall this season. Jokic is not only a leader in points, rebounds, and assists, but he also adds steals and is a great shooter from the field and the free throw line, making him a highly efficient player with a high usage rate. No other top players are shooting 56% from the field and 85% from the free throw line. Then there’s Jamal Murray, who may miss the most of the season due to a ruptured ACL. Jokic will get more action as a result of this! It’s clear when you can fill a center position with the first selection, and rightfully so. Jokic is the top roto player in the league. Karabell’s words
There’s no question about it: it’s Jokic, and no one else comes close. If he remains healthy, Jokic may have the greatest overall roto season since Stephen Curry in 2015-16. That is the actual question (given his health): what is Jokic’s ultimate ceiling? Curry averaged 30.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists, 5.1 three-pointers, 2.1 steals, and 0.2 blocks in 2015-16, while shooting 50.4 percent from the field and 90.8 percent from the free throw line. That is, in my opinion, the greatest single season of the fantasy period. I don’t believe Jokic reaches that level of performance, but a resemblance of last season’s statistics may push Harden’s 2018-19 output or Anthony Davis’ 2017-18 output. Cregan’s words
In roto leagues, Jokic is my first choice. He’s coming off a spectacular season in which he won the MVP award and came close to averaging a triple-double, and he’ll be looking to improve in all areas this season. Jamal Murray, the Nuggets’ main perimeter scorer and facilitator, will miss the majority of the season as he recovers from knee surgery. As a result, Jokic may play a bigger role in offensive creation this season than last. Last season, his shooting and aggressive demeanor made him virtually unguardable one-on-one, but his court vision and passing skills make double him a nightmarish situation for opponents. When you consider that Jokic is an iron man, missing just two games in the last three seasons, he is obviously worthy of the #1 position in roto drafts. Snellings –

Brooklyn Nets’ James Harden, SG
Even on a team stacked with superstars, Harden is the club’s primary creator and distributor. The bearded one will lead the NBA in assists, shoot and make twice as many 3-pointers as Jokic, and flirt with triple-doubles just as often as the reigning MVP in this unusual role at the head of a great squad. Harden’s volume free-throw shooting and deep shooting tilt the scales in his favor. I also believe that last season was an anomaly in terms of a really durable player over the previous decade.
