The Chiefs offense is made up of many talented players, but the two most important are Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Hill has been one of the NFL’s best receivers for years now, while Kelce is a top tight end in the league.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes was being pursued down the sideline by a linebacker and had to make a split-second choice on the single most crucial play of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season-opening victory against the Cleveland Browns.
Mahomes saw Tyreek Hill’s raised hand well down the field as he raced. He tossed it to Hill, like he had done so many times against the Browns.
“You just vomit it up sometimes,” Mahomes added. “He’s a tiny guy, he goes and gets it, and he’s fairly quick, so things generally go well.”
For Mahomes and the Chiefs, the play worked out nicely. Hill evaded the safety to make the grab and then raced the rest of the way for a 75-yard touchdown, bringing the Chiefs within two points of the Browns, who had led for most of the game. Hill’s 11 receptions for 197 yards and a touchdown led the Chiefs to a 33-29 victory.
• Watt is no longer ‘tipptoeing’ about practice • Saquon’s next challenge: a short rest period • Tua is already connecting with WR Jaylen Waddle • Hill and Kelce aren’t enough for Mahomes. • Fields had a huge effect in only five snaps • The Saints have shown they can throw Rodgers off. Bengals’ hopes are boosted by Burrow’s performance.
In the second half, when the Chiefs needed touchdowns from within the Cleveland 20, Mahomes went to his other go-to target. Travis Kelce caught both of his touchdowns in the red zone, including the one that put the Chiefs up for the first time in the fourth quarter. Kelce hauled in six passes for 76 yards.
Other Chiefs wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs combined for ten receptions and 64 yards. Nobody on the Chiefs is going to complain, especially after Hill and Kelce led them to a comeback win. They understand, however, that when others, such as wide receiver Mecole Hardman and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, get more engaged in the passing game, it will be more effective.
Mahomes remarked, “Those guys are open.” “There was a play I believe I threw to Tyreek down the left sideline for us at the time, but Mecole was popping for a touchdown if I just had a little more time.” I hit a play to [Demarcus Robinson] that I’d hit a thousand times before, and I kind of underthrew him.
“Those guys are going to make plays,” says the coach. With players like Tyreek and Travis commanding so much attention in our offense, they’ll create plays, and I have to trust them to do so.”
Kelce and Hill have long dominated the Chiefs’ receiving statistics. Since Hill came in 2016, they’ve been 1-2 on the team in receptions and yards in some order every season.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, haven’t had many games like the one against the Browns, in which they were so reliant on them. Hill and Kelce were responsible for 63% of the receptions, 80% of the yards, and 100% of the throwing touchdowns.
These percentages were 46, 54, and 65 respectively last year.
When it comes to getting other receivers engaged, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “I believe that will happen.” “I think Pat answered that best. There were certain players there [against the Browns] who fit into the route and he could use them, but he just chose to go to the other guys. I believe we’re OK there. We’ve got enough versatility with the tight ends and other receivers to change things up a little bit.”
Against the Browns, Mahomes can’t be blamed for relying heavily on Hill and Kelce. The touchdown pass to Hill seemed to be an interception. Hill was accompanied by Browns safety John Johnson at the time. Hill, on the other hand, reacted to the throw much better than Johnson, as Mahomes had anticipated.
Mahomes added, “He’s very excellent at adapting to the ball.” “He’s a world-class athlete. If it’s not his pace, adjusting while the ball is in the air is arguably the greatest thing he can do.”
According to Hill, “That is very difficult for any [defensive back]. I don’t give a damn who he is. It’ll be difficult for him if you’re running full speed and I stop and catch the ball.”
In the red zone, the Browns struggled to cover Kelce. He altered his route depending on the Browns’ coverage each time, and he was wide open.
“He has a great understanding of coverages,” Mahomes added. “We’re up against a squad that uses a lot of zone coverage and switches zones often. They have several fantastic players on their team. He can interpret it on the fly in a way.”
